Welcome to Tony Richards Messages21 Setting Goals Pt3 Welcome to this week’s message on leadership, self-confidence, and how to feel good about yourself everyday as you interact with people, in safety and comfort, at home and work. This week’s message is about Critical Step 4 Setting Goals. The Critical Step must be completed in their numerical order. The Recognition and Embracing of Your Own Uniqueness (Step1), the Celebration of Achievements (Step2), and the Writing of a Vision Statement (Step3), must be in place before you attempt to set too many goals. The reason for that is because you need to have a positive view of yourself, be comfortable with your uniqueness, and have a certainty of direction in life before you can be confident that those goals are always achievable. I want you to receive the full benefit of goal setting. Don’t be concerned if you have missed some of the messages on how to achieve those first three Critical Steps, as they will be returning with more information over the coming weeks and months. Today’s message will be more about the different types of goals and what you will get out of setting them. There are many different types of goals. Your targets could be social, familial, work-based, physical, mental, spiritual or financial. Social goals will define your interactions with neighbours, friends or associates. Family goals will determine a direction or plan that may be written independently or with the assistance and cooperation of your family. Work ambitions may envisage promotion or merely some action that will recognise your talents, leadership qualities, or a direction you believe your company should take. This is important because setting goals is a sign of Leadership. Physical targets could be used to support a physical exercise program. Mental goals may require the learning of something new through an educational course or by just reading another book. Spiritual goals may focus on the practice of meditation or religion, if they are your areas of interest. Financial targets imply a need for some material acquisitions, or financial security. As I have previously provided messages that showed how to set goals – and they will be coming around again in a few weeks or months – I would like to include today some of the tips for setting easy goals that make you feel good about yourself. One of my clients was concerned about her busy schedule of raising a family and having a high-pressure business career as well. She never seemed to find time for herself. When we looked over her schedule it appeared that either Saturday or Sunday morning (depending on children’s sport commitments) was her only time when a possibility of private time was available. A family conference took place and it was decided that a timetable could be set for one morning or the other each week. This worked out comfortably, as all she wanted was a foam bath with scented candles once a week to relax. The family even helped by running the bath and setting the candles up for her each week. Good luck maintaining that little number. What a life some people have. I know myself that Friday night football is one of the small goals that make me feel good and something pretty special has to come along to dissuade me from that event. I always recommend that when starting to set goals, you seek some small endeavours, which provide for personal satisfaction. Successfully achieving small goals, makes you feel good, and provides the incentive to move on to bigger and better goals. However the most important value in setting goals is what you may get out of it personally. Supposing your goals are material acquisitions, the items achieved are usually of small importance. You would find that if your goal was a car, and you gave it away or lost it for whatever reason, the feat of acquiring it is what contributed to the advancement of your levels of self-belief. The real value in setting goals therefore may not lie in their procurement.
The real value of setting goals could turn out to be your personal growth
